Co-Director of Education, K–12 and Intergenerational Learning—Education

The Brooklyn Museum is seeking a passionate, trailblazing, and creative Co-Director of Education. This position will help develop a strategic plan for expanding the reach and impact of our Education programs by deepening connections with K–12 schools and local communities and upholding our ethos of inclusion, diversity, and welcome. In alignment with our mission and strategic goals, the Co-Director will establish a progressive vision for the Museum’s school programs, family, and intergenerational programs. The ideal candidate will have a clear pedagogic approach to arts education, a track record in arts and social justice, and an understanding of the arts as a means of building healthy communities. The candidate will also be an inspired leader with considered and innovative ideas about how the Museum can best serve its audiences and communities.

Requirements:

Experienced museum education professional with creative vision and strategic understanding of the field
Diplomatic and collaborative team player with proven leadership and well-developed management skills as well as excellent speaking and writing abilities
Must be able to manage a budget of more than $2 million in addition to having experience in developing grant proposals and other fundraising initiatives
Ability to listen to others and build consensus
Passion for art, arts education, K–12 learning, early childhood education, art-making, community building, and social justice
Experience in and commitment to working with such historically underrepresented groups as ELL (English Language Learner) and immigrant communities, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) communities, LGBTQ+ audiences, lower-income and working-class families, and people with disabilities—and embrace the knowledge that these constituents bring to the Museum’s educational programming
An advanced degree in art history, education, or a related field as well as a sophisticated knowledge of art museums
Responsibilities:

Serves as the Museum’s leader and expert in developing and implementing diverse and innovative education programs
The Co-Director of Education is a senior staff member reporting to the Deputy Director of Learning and Social Impact and shares responsibility with the other Director of Education for supervising all of the Museum's educational activities
Represents the Museum in all matters involving educational initiatives; interacts with senior management teams on development and strategic planning issues; works closely with staff from all departments; communicates with the Museum’s Director and Trustees on educational policy; actively collaborates with colleagues both within and outside of the Museum
Leads work on the strategic vision for School as well as Family and Community programs, developing strategies for significant growth over the next five years
Shares oversight of the Education department’s administrative staff and directly supervises the Senior Manager of Family Programs, the Senior Manager of School Programs, and a team of Associate Managers, including the Associate Manager of Art-Making Initiatives, the Associate Manager of Teacher Services, the Associate Manager of School Partnerships, and the Associate Manager of Gallery Visits
Activities within this realm include art-making classes for all ages; out-of-school camps for families; weekend programs for children and families; tours and programs for visitors with disabilities; tours for school visitors; in-depth school partnerships; teacher-training programs; after-school programs; and planning a full array of interpretive materials for special exhibitions and permanent-collection reinstallations.
Within the Education Division and the Museum at large, the Director of Education plays an important role in advancing universal access and supporting the Museum’s commitment to social justice as well as its ambition to be the most visitor-centered art museum in New York
Responsible for envisioning and implementing initiatives that expand our reach and impact through innovative programs, including serving underfunded schools in central Brooklyn, engaging educators in our annual MLK Day of Action, and collaborating with Cool Culture (a citywide cultural-access program) and our K–12 partners to expand family access through our annual Family Day
The Director of Education serves as a senior manager and has key financial responsibilities in leading the program and securing grants and other funding for its programs
Plays a key role on the Board’s Education committee and participates in other important senior-level committees to address the institution’s financial health and long-term sustainability
The Co-Directors of Education participate and support the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access (DEIA) committee by helping to implement museum-wide training and other initiatives that ensure compliance with the Museum’s (DEIA) plan.

Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, some late Thursday nights, and some weekends.
