Working with the curatorial staff of three Museum departments, the Curatorial Assistant helps with projects related to collections and exhibitions. The Curatorial Assistant conducts and assists with scholarly research and writing, and supports the administration of collections in collaboration with internal and external colleagues.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in art history, museum studies, visual culture, anthropology, or a related humanities discipline, or two to three years of experience in a museum or other cultural organization
Highly detail-oriented, organized, and able to prioritize among multiple projects
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Experience with collaborative projects
Background in scholarly research and writing
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic office functions (e.g., scanning, filing)
Additional qualifications (preferred):
Familiarity with collection databases such as The Museum System (TMS)
Knowledge of African, Asian, and/or Islamic art
Some foreign-language skills
Responsibilities:
Provide general administrative support
Serve as a primary point of contact for internal and external inquiries related to collection and exhibition projects
Assist with and contribute to gallery rotations, collection activations, reinstallations, and temporary exhibitions, including:
Assisting with the formulation of proposals and exhibition concepts
Compiling and maintaining exhibition checklists
Conducting research on specific subjects
Drafting labels and other exhibition texts
Collaborating with colleagues across departments, including but not limited to Conservation; Development; the Education Division; Exhibitions; Graphic Design; Publications, Interpretation, and Editorial Services; the Registrar; and Visitor Experience and Engagement
Lead both assigned and independent research projects related to the collection, including potential loans, proposed acquisitions, deaccessions, and repatriation requests
Maintain departmental files and TMS records relating to objects, artists, and exhibitions
Write social-media posts about works in the collections
Field scholarly inquiries and organize collection visits from researchers, school groups, donors, and the public
Visit potential donors and lenders with curators
