Youth and Family Programs Teaching Artist—Education

We seek a warm, energetic teaching artist to collaborate in designing and teaching our Sunday family programs, including F.A.M. (Family Art Magic), birthday parties, and our new weekend art-making program.

Qualifications:

A demonstrable commitment to our vision of art as a catalyst for a connected, civic, and empathetic world
Bachelor’s degree or BFA in visual arts, education/early childhood education, art history, or a related field
Minimum of one year’s experience in museum teaching
Gallery and studio teaching skills with experience in a variety of media
Comfortable collaborating as well as working independently on lesson development and delivery
Strong working knowledge of education theory and childhood developmental stages
Excellent group management, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Bilingual candidates encouraged
Responsibilities:

F.A.M. (Family Art Magic)

Work in educator pairs to plan a 90-minute program for 4-6 year olds with an adult companion; lessons are inspired by the semester’s theme, the Museum’s collection, and/or studio art materials and processes
Co-teach the lesson’s gallery and studio components, which include:
Gallery discussion with participants that is age-appropriate, family-friendly, focuses on Museum objects, and explores the goals of the lesson
In-gallery independent family activity (e.g., sketching, material explorations, gallery hunts)
Studio activity linked to the gallery objects/tour theme, as well as studio prep and clean-up
Session-end program evaluation and promotion of other Museum programs to the audience
Free Weekend Program (new):

Work with families (all ages) in a gallery or studio setting using art supplies for open and creative exploration or artist-designed projects in partnership with visiting artists or community partners
Collaborate on program and printed materials
Assist with studio prep and cleanup
Support Museum’s goals by sharing program information and/or assisting with evaluation process
Birthday Parties:

Plan and facilitate age-appropriate learning experiences for ages 4 and up with gallery exploration and art-making, focusing on Museum objects and tour theme
Adapt lessons as needed
Assist with studio prep and cleanup
With Coordinator, act as co-host for families
Meetings and Professional Development:

Annual all-staff training (2 hours)
Research, prepare, and plan meetings (minimum 3 hours/month for 7 months)

Reports to: Family Programs Coordinator

Position type: Part-time

Salary: F.A.M. and Birthday Parties: $50/hr teaching (includes set-up and clean-up); $40/hr research, prep, planning; Free Weekend Program (new): $40/hr teaching (includes setup and cleanup)

Union status: Union—UAW Local 2110

FLSA status: Non-exempt

Schedule: Sundays: F.A.M. (18 days/year): 10 am–1 pm, October 16–November 20, 2022; January 8–February 12, 2023; March 5–April 2, 2023; Free Weekend Program (new): (20 Sundays/year): dates TBD; Birthday Parties (up to 4/year): 3–6 pm, various Sundays
