The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild NYC’s soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs and staff are funded and managed through the DSNY Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability (BRS) in partnership with host institutions.
The Compost Operations Coordinator is based at Queens Botanical Garden and reports to the Project Manager of the NYC Compost Project Hosted by Queens Botanical Garden. This position will support the Operations Coordinator and will share responsibilities for accepting and processing food scraps and other organic waste products. This includes staffing Food Scrap Drop Offs, making large quantities of compost with volunteers by hand and working in the field in all aspects of compost production. The position will be responsible for picking up and delivering material. The ideal candidate will enjoy physical labor; delight in working with people and sharing knowledge as well as working solo driving vehicles.
