Research Assistant for Textiles—Art

The Brooklyn Museum seeks a focused and detail-oriented Research Assistant for Textiles for a full-time two-year position to undertake cataloging, research, and reporting related to the Museum’s European and American textile collections. The candidate will work closely with the curators of Decorative Arts and Design to identify collection objects suitable for retention, display, and deaccession; write reports; prepare presentations; and conduct historical and art historical research. The Research Assistant will also aid in compiling possible institutions and auction houses for transfer of deaccessioned works.

A successful candidate must be detail-oriented and a creative thinker, with the ability to multitask. They should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, a demonstrated ability to be well organized, and superlative research skills. The candidate should have extensive coursework in textiles, knowledge of the history of textiles (especially eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European and American textiles), and experience handling textiles.

Since this position is research based, we expect the candidate to be able to conduct research independently and have knowledge of existing scholarly resources. Only applications that include a cover letter will be considered.
